Garters

The wearing and tossing of the garter has been a tradition since about the 14th century. The bride wears the garter under her dress just above her knee. At the reception the groom removes the garter (hopefully in a gentlemanly fashion) and throws the garter to the single male guests. Tradition states that he will then be the next person to get married. This is similar to the throwing of the bouquet to the single female guests.

garterSomething blue is often the garter that is worn by the bride and in early biblical times blue was seen as a symbol of purity. Although as years pass traditions change and garters can be white, ivory, blue, pink or even red.
Many modern brides have two garters, one which is thrown and one which is kept as a wedding keepsake.
